DTS Neo:6 is a surround sound decoding format very similar in functionality to the Dolby Prologic II and IIx. It takes stereo content and converts the sound into 5.1 or 6.1 channel formats. The format extracts a 6.1 channel surround field from the analogue two-channel material with receivers and preamps that have DTS Neo:6 decoders. The analogue two-channel materials include stereo CD, vinyl record, stereo movie soundtrack or TV broadcast.
The format was designed to compete with Dolby Digital II and succeeds in one-upping Pro Logic II with the additional rear channel, a center surround. Front left and right, a center, two rear speakers, one or two surround rear speakers and a sub channel form the speaker setup for Neo:6. Rear speakers provide a single surround channel, surround rear speakers play an additional rear surround channel and the sub channel provides the low-frequency bass management.
Neo: 6 is a 6-channel matrix surround sound format, compatible with all two-channel source materials. It makes use of 6.1 or 5.1 channel home theater system to create natural sound effects. The format transforms the two-channel audio into six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound and the six and five separate channels produced, match the speaker layout.
DTS Neo:6 capability is included in all DTS-ES equipped receivers. The format can generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material. The technology allows different sound elements to be pushed to the proper channels separately such that they follow the original presentation.
