DTS-HD Master Audio

DTS-HD Master Audio, created by Digital Theater System, is a lossless audio codec. Formerly known as DTS++, it is an extension of DTS that supports an unlimited number of surround sound channels. When played back on devices not supporting the Master Audio or High Resolution extension, it is degraded to a lossy “core” track.

The codec is an optional audio format for Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, where it is limited to a maximum of 8 discrete channels. However, it is fast becoming the standard for Blu-ray lossless audio format. The format can downmix to 5.1 and two-channel and deliver audio quality at bit rates that can extend from DTS Digital Surround up to lossless.

The technology supports variable bit rates, which can range from up to 24.5 Mbit/s on a Blu-ray Disc and up to 18.0 Mbit/s for HD DVD. This is accompanied by encoding of two-channel at up to 192 kHz or that of 8 channels at 96 kHz/24 bit. “Channel mapping” is a function that allows remixing the soundtrack to compensate for a different channel layout in the playback system, when more than two channels are used.

HD DVD and Blu-ray players decode the DTS “core” resolution soundtrack at 1.5 Mbit/s, and DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD are the only technologies to deliver uncompressed lossless surround sound for these formats with highest quality audio performance. The technology may be transported to AV receivers in 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channels at full uncompressed quality over RCA connectors, HDMi 1.1 or higher, and HDMI 1.3 or higher.
