DTS-HD High Resolution Audio

DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is one of the two high-definition DTS audio formats for Blu-ray media. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio are the extensions to the original DTS audio format. The format delivers up to 7.1 channels of sound at a sampling frequency of 96 kHz and 24-bit depth resolution.

With constant bit rates up to 6.0 Mbit/s, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is selected as an optional surround sound format for Blu-ray Disc and for constant bit rates up to 3.0 Mbit/s; it is selected for HD DVD. It also functions as an alternative for DTS-HD Master Audio if disc space doesn’t allow it.

The format has been designed for projects with disc space constraints and delivers a high definition reproduction of the original studio master. The reproduced signal has a constant bit-rate that ranges from 2.0 Mbps to 6.0 Mbps. The format provides up to 7.1 channels via HDMI 1.3 or analog connections. The audio resolution is backward compatible with DTS Digital Surround Core.

The format is ideal for use with legacy equipment. Higher-peak bit rates are obtained by higher sampling frequencies, greater bit depth and additional channels. Encoding of the format requires a single pass that is around four times faster than real time.
