DTS 96/24 - Compressed Surround Format Technology

DTS 96/24 is a compressed surround format technology that supports 96 kHz and 24-bit sound resolution and multi-channel capabilities. It also happens to be the first technology to do so and is the best multi-channel audio format for DVD-Video. It offers an unparalleled level of audio quality for multi-channel sound on DVD-Video. It is also fully backward-compatible with all DTS decoders.

‘96’ refers to a 96 kHz sampling rate and ‘24’ refers to 24-bit word length. The technology allows the delivery of 5.1 channels of 96 kHz audio, 24-bit and high quality video on the DVD-Video. Earlier only two channels of 24-bit, 96 kHz audio could be delivered on DVD Video, but with the invention of DTS 96/24, the delivery of 5.1 channels was made possible.

DTS 96/24 can be placed in the video zone on DVD-Audio discs. This makes the discs playable on all DTS-compatible DVD players. Along with the existing DTS decoders, it is also compatible with receivers that have a standard DTS decoder. That is, it is backward-compatible with the older receivers too and the output in this case would be the standard 48 kHz signal.

The super low audio compression rate compatibility makes the audio sound rich and sophisticated as the sound quality is almost as high as 96 kHz, 24-bit. The realistic sound-field effect is made possible by the higher sampling rate of 96 kHz that capture super-high frequencies that drift down the hearing spectrum. Also, 24-bit depth provides extended dynamic range, on a level with professional audio. This yields better frequency response, tonal accuracy and dynamic range when played back on DTS 96/24 capable receiver.
