Dolby Digital Surround EX is the cinema version of Dolby Digital EX and functions essentially the same way. It was co-developed by Dolby and Lucasfilm THX at the time of release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, in May 1999. Since then, the technology has been used for the Star Wars prequels on the DVD versions and the remastered original Star Wars trilogy.
It introduces an additional rear surround audio channel to the Dolby Digital 5.1 channel and takes it a step further. The addition provides a backward-compatible means for the 5.1 soundtracks to have the sixth surround channel for improvised effects. The effects include clarification of audio effects, increased cinema realism and a more enveloping surround sound experience.
The additional surround channel is matrix encoded onto the Left and Right Surround channels of the 5.1 mix. This is essentially the same as the front center channel on Dolby Surround encoded stereo soundtracks. This avoids the loss of information when played on standard 5.1 systems. They can even be played in 6.1 or 7.1, on systems furnished with Surround EX decoding and additional speakers.
Surround sound is the use of multiple audio tracks for a more realistic experience while watching a movie or listening to music that brings the action behind you to life. With Dolby Digital Surround EX, the center-channel information in the soundtrack is reproduced by speakers placed directly behind the audience that adds a new dimension to the cinematic experience.
The technology supports 6.1 channel home audio playbacks. It is backward-compatible with many cinemas equipped with 5.1-channel Dolby Digital decoding. The digital flag helps in automatically activating EX decoding in a compatibly equipped EX receiver.
